Randomness vs. Order

Ultimately the argument against/for the esoteric realms (including Astrology) as well as religion comes down to this: Randomness vs. Order, who is the universal architect? Or perhaps more fittingly, is there one at all?

It is easy to assume that life is random. There does not appear to be an inherent obvious ‘order’ to it. Certainly not an order that everyone can agree on or one that we can easily control. Life often seems unfair, chaotic, and even cruel, so why would anyone think there is an order to it??

Max Karl Ernst Ludwig Plank

“As a man who has devoted his whole life to the most clearheaded science, to the study of matter. I can tell you as a result of my research about the atoms this much: There is not matter as such! All matter originates and exists only by virtue of a force which brings the particles of an atom to vibration and holds this most minute solar system of the atom together… We must assume behind this force the existence of a conscious and intelligent mind. This mind is the matrix of all matter.”

Max Karl Ernst Ludwig Plank, (23 April 1858 – 4 October 1947)

German Theoretical Physicist and Professor

Nobel Prize in Physics in 1918 for the discovery of energy quanta

Astrology is an ancient practice focused on the analysis and measurement of the synchronicity of human life with the movement of the solar system. It is based on the idea that in some sense the universe is ONE, and we are all just parts of it, far more connected than we think. We may not understand it, or think it is fair, and we may not always assess it correctly but there is a highly complex underlying order to life.

Heinrich Rudolf Hertz“One cannot escape the feeling that these mathematical formulas have an independent existence and intelligence of their own, that they are wiser than we are, wiser even than their discoverers.”

Heinrich Rudolf Hertz (22 February 1857 – 1 January 1894)

German physicist who first conclusively proved the existence of the electromagnetic waves predicted by James Clerk Maxwell’s equations of electromagnetism. (The unit of frequency, cycle per second, was named “hertz” in his honor)

The laws of nature are made of number. Pythagoras said that mathematics was the language of nature. The planets may be considered mathematical points in space, the zodiac a mathematical framework and the birth chart a dynamic geometric  blueprint of each individual’s mind and temperament. Numbers are and always have been a major part of understanding astrological influence. The language of astrology is made up of symbols and numbers and it is through their geometric interaction with each other that astrologers may gain powerful insights into personal and mundane events.

“God is a mathematician of a very high order and he used very advanced mathematics in constructing the universe.”.

Paul Adrien Maurice Dirac (08 August 1902 – 20 October 1984)

An English theoretical physicist who is regarded as one of the most significant physicists of the 20th century.

Shared the Nobel Prize for physics with Erwin Schrodinger “for the discovery of new productive forms of atomic theory”.

The idea of the microcosm/macrocosm is so old it is difficult to assign it an origination point. In Western, Greek and Hellenistic Astrology we most associate this fundamental idea with the enigmatic figure of Hermes Trismegistus, however some form of the microcosm/macrocosm correspondence (comparing human beings to the universe) was common inmost ancient cultures (ie ancient Mesopotamia, ancient China, ancient India) The ubiquitous truth of the concept of the microcosm/macrocosm although greatly undervalued in the last century and a half has resurfaced at the forefront of modern physics.

David Bohm (Dec 20, 1917 – Oct 27, 1992)

“One of the Most Significant Theoretical Physicists of the 20th Century”

“David Bohm believed that his body was a microcosm of the macrocosm, and that the universe was a mystical place where past, present, and future coexisted. He postulated the existence of a realm of pure information (the implicate order) from which the physical, observable phenomena unfold. Unlike classical physics where reality is viewed as particles of separate, independent elements, Bohm proposed that the fundamental reality is the continuous enfoldment, (into the implicate order) and unfoldment (of the explicate order) from the subtle realms. In this flow matter and space or each part of the whole.”

The reality that I study through my astrologer’s lens is the same one that a doctor examines in her office and the politicians’ debate in parliament. It is the same reality that is discussed in universities, colleges, monasteries, ashrams, restaurants, pubs, kitchens, coffee shops, prison-yards and playgrounds. There is only one reality. At some point our common human experiences cross paths and it is the enduring truths that repeatedly surface (albeit cloaked in countless disguises) century after century that guide us forward into greater understanding.

Fritjof Capra

“The mystic and the physicist arrive at the same conclusion; one starting from the inner realm, the other from the outer world. The harmony between their views confirms the ancient Indian wisdom that Brahman, the ultimate reality without, is identical to Atman, the reality within.”

Fritjof Capra (born February 1, 1939)

An Austrian-born American physicist, systems theorist and deep ecologist.

Author of The Tao of Physics (1975), The Turning Point (1982), Uncommon Wisdom (1988), The Web of Life (1996), and The Hidden Connections (2002), and co-author of The Systems View of Life (2014).

Once you get past the very different languages they use,” author Joseph Selbie explains, “there is a surprisingly clear unity of science and religion.” Selbie is the author of THE PHYSICS OF GOD:Unifying Quantum Physics, Consciousness, M-Theory, Heaven, Neuroscience and Transcendence. “In my decades long exploration,” summarizes Selbie, “The findings of the ‘science of religion’ and the findings of the ‘science of matter’ together combine to give us the most complete view of reality.”

Niels Bohr

The fact that religions through the ages have spoken in images, parables & paradoxes means simply that there are no other ways of grasping the reality to which they refer.”

Niels Bohr (Oct 7, 1885 – Nov 18, 1962) Danish Physicist     (considered one of the founding fathers of quantum physics)

1922 Nobel Prize in Physics (for making foundational contributions to understanding atomic structure and quantum theory)

As an Astrologer my position is made clear by my occupational choice (I believe there is order in the universe) but for humanity in a general sense (in all its vested forms: science, the esoteric, religion, philosophy & politics) the answer to the question as to whether the nature of the creation and expansion of the universe has been ‘random’ or ‘ordered’ must remain unascertained as the debate appears to be indefinite. It is a sad misconception however to believe that all those inclined to the scientific path are believers in what author Joseph Selbie terms ‘scientific materialism‘- the philosophy that states every phenomenon is a material phenomenon in space and time caused by material interaction– that there is nothing but matter and energy. This short exposition alone highlights thoughts of some of twentieth centuries most celebrated minds of science pondering the significance of how what they have learned may be applied to the greater mystery of life, and in doing such, these great thinkers not only do not rule out that there is a greater order to life but actually insinuate there is one

Albert Einstein

“You will hardly find one among the profounder sort of scientific minds that does not have a peculiar sort of religious feeling of his own. But it is different from the religion of the naive man. His religious feeling takes the form of a rapturous amazement at the harmony of natural law which reveals an intelligence of such superiority that when compared with it- all the systematic thinking and acting of human beings is an utterly insignificant reflection.”

Albert Einstein (March 14 1879- April 18 1955) German-born theoretical physicist

Widely acknowledged to be one of the greatest physicists of all time.

Known for developing the theory of relativity (special and general), contributions to the development of quantum physics, mass-energy equivalence formula E=mc², Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921 for his services to theoretical physics and especially for his discover of the law of the photoelectric effect. His name ‘Einstein’ has become synonymous with the term “genius”.
