The Ascendant

The Ascendant

The Ascendant, is the degree of the zodiac that was on the Eastern Horizon at the moment of birth, as “seen” from the location of birth. Accordingly it is often called the rising sign and manifests as our ‘front door’-  or the first thing people see about us.

Basically the Ascendant’s zodiacal sign shows how we expect to encounter and experience the world. At the same time it is also representative of what the moment of our birth was like and how we experienced the outside world as well.

Our Mask

The Ascendant is often thought of as the ‘mask that we wear’ when we relate to other people. Rob Hand describes it as ‘a point of self-manifestation where energies of the self pass from the inner realm to the outer and are made to manifest to the not-self‘. It is the type of action that we take upon the outer world.  In other words this ‘mask’ not only represents the way others see us but it also colors the way we see others and the rest of the world.

As I have said the Ascendant is the first thing that people notice about us and represents the way we relate to others as well. For this reason it can be thought of as how we steer our life or how we control our life direction.

Optimally, this mask we wear, should serve the rest of our chart. To understand the psychological coloring in which the Ascendant will manifest, we must  look to the nature of it’s zodiacal sign.
